Remembering Ronald “Big Government” Reagan

It’s nice to see that even Bush’s staunchest defenders admit what a joke he is. Ed Morrisey:

Somehow, I think people will miss this man more than the one featured in the “Miss Me Yet?” billboard [Bush 43].

This man” is of course none other than Ronald Reagan, populist hero of the Republican right:

Ronald Reagan hope and change billboard

So long as the right is going to continue worshiping this guy, we ought to take a look at his top accomplishments to better understand why. Here’s the short list:

  • Quadrupled the US debt from $700B to $3T. Yes, Mr. Conservative is responsible for a big chunk of the debt, and only the Bushes did more to increase it (Clinton, of course, created the first government surplus since Carter).
  • Increased taxes on the elderly by making Social Security payments taxable income.
  • Moved Social Security off-budget in order to help hide the US deficit in government accounting.
  • Bailed out the Savings & Loan institutions to the tune of $150 billion during the 1987 crisis. (Almost $300 billion in today’s dollars.)
  • Increased taxes on the middle class by expanding the Alternative Minimum Tax to new brackets.
  • To reiterate: quadrupled the federal debt by growing it at an average of 45%/term.

These are the enduring Republican ideals, apparently: higher government spending, higher taxes, federal bailouts, and lots of debt. Rock on, Mr. Reagan!
